Moccasin Bend Park May Be Saved By Lame Duck Session
posted October 23, 2002
Rep. Zach Wamp said the bill to make Moccasin Bend a national park didn't make it through the Senate before legislators recessed, but there is still hope for a lame duck session.
"We have been told we will be going back for a lame duck session. I expect we can pass the Moccasin Bill sometime in November or December," he said.
Rep. Wamp has noted that if the bill does not get enacted during the current Congress that it will be necessary to start over. The House earlier approved the bill.
A Senate committee moved a compromise plan. Under this plan, Moccasin Bend would not be a separate unit of the National Park Service, but would be part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. Also, the Moccasin Bend Psychiatric Hospital and the Moccasin Bend Golf Course would not be part of the park.
Rep. Zach Wamp earlier said he believed he could get approval for the compromise in the House and get it passed by President George Bush.
The new section would be the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District.
Rep. Wamp said he also hopes for action on the bill authorizing a Chickamauga Lock replacement in the lame duck session.
